THE COSMIC SOUND – AAUM / OM (NAADA BRAHMA)
AAUM / OM - 1
AAUM/OM is the first vibration of creation that has manifested from the SILENT, unmanifested Absolute state of the UNIVERSAL BEING.
The intention of the unmanifest Absolute Being to manifest itself as creation has resulted in the arising of the sound AAUM/OM as the first vibration of creation, as a reaction of that intention. This sound AAUM/OM is formless, yet, it has a form because not only does it spread occupying all space but also acts as a force. This sound of AAUM/OM has a beginning and an end as it has manifested giving rise to time and space. Thus, evolved the time and space. From Absolute silence the sound that rises will merge back into silence. Therefore, absolute peace and bliss which is Brahman, is in Absolute SILENCE and it is the Universal Consciousness which is behind this Cosmic sound AAUM/OM.
This first vibration of creation which is AAUM/OM, through its continued vibration accumulate and transforms itself into energy and consciousness which combination (God particle – paramanu) becomes the creation as expressed in the form of living and non-living beings. But the entire creation will be within time and space with AAUM/OM as its root. The varied creation and its unity in AAUM/OM is described in Vedanta in the form of an inverted tree.
The root of the tree is upwards into the sky (ether/Absolute Being/Supreme Being) and the trunk is descending of the creation through the accumulated and concentrated sound waves of AAUM/OM.
The branches and leaves of the tree are the various items of creation, both living and non-living. Thus, AAUM/OM is at the root of creation and when it dissolves into unmanifest Absolute Universal being, the creation, which is within time and space, is also withdrawn into Absolute Being.
Thus, the unmanifest Absolute Being is in the silent and ZERO state and IT which is the cause of the sound AAUM/OM and all creation. Therefore, beyond matter there is this sound AAUM/OM, beyond AAUM/OM there is nothing but pure SILENCE which is the true NATURE of the Unmanifest Absolute Universal Consciousness where cosmic energy is also merged into the Pure Consciousness.
The cosmic sound AAUM is the added as a prefix to the mantras in Vedic tradition for invoking various cosmic forces (Gods and Goddesses) governing the creation for worship.
In the Vedic tradition mantras or hymns are repeated or recited loudly. Therefore, the sound vibrations of the Vedic mantras are expelled outward into the environment. In Vedantic tradition (Meditation) especially in Maanasika Japa, the mantra is repeated only mentally turning the entire vibration of the mantra inward for the purification of karma and to reach the SELF. If AAM is prefixed to the mantra (divine name), one may quickly evoke the Kundalini energy (Basal energy) even before sufficient purification of karma and therefore, the spiritual practitioner may develop FALSE (pseudo) renunciation tendencies. Therefore, the primordial cosmic sound AAM is NOT add to the Naama mantras given in the lists of Natural Meditation.
The householders can meditate with these Naama mantras without any fear of developing any type of renunciation or premature detachment. In fact, they realise their responsibilities and duties better and become real karma yogis practising karma yoga as preached by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad-Gita, along with Jnana Yoga (Meditation).
Maanasika Naama Japa (Meditation) purifies karma gradually and the experience of SELF and the Cosmic SELF will be Very natural, and the practitioners will ever remain NORMAL, more committed to their duties towards their job, family, society and the world. In fact, Meditation makes the practitioner more normal, responsible and more humane gradually. Those who have already renounced the world and taken to Monk order may add AAM to the mantras given here for their Meditation.
1.Pure spiritual practices which are Absolutely divine in nature are called Saathwic saadhana (OM SYMBOL). 2.Semi Divine practices are called Raajasic saadhana (OM SYMBOL ) 3. Non-divine practices are described as Thamasic saadhana (OM SYMBOL ) |
Silence to Sound; Sound to Light; Light to Atoms; Atoms to Molecules; Molecules to Matter, that is the evolution of Creation.
AAUM / OM - 2
It is the basic creative cosmic sound which has manifested from absolutely, supremely, peaceful silence which is the ultimate nature of the Supreme Being.
AAUM/OM is the first expressed form from the Supreme Being and it is highly subtle form of the creation or you can say it is the seed of the creation in which the entire Creation is hidden. Even though AAUM is formless, the cosmic sound has distinct, subtle form. It is in the 3 shape and from the middle of which a force is rising towards the Supreme Being and that is known as Urdhva Kundalini. The lower portion of the 3 number represents the seven lower planes of the creation known as Atala, Vitala Sutala, Talatala, Rasatala, Mahatala and Patala.
The upper portion of the 3 shape represents the upper seven planes of the creation- The Earth plane which is called Bhu Loka, and the other higher planes being Buvar Loka, Swarga Loka, Maha Loka, Jano Loka, Tapo Loka, Brahma Loka. These fourteen planes of the creation comprise of the entire universe which is hidden in the seed form in the sound AAUM. This also represents human body, from the bottom of the spine and upwards, all the higher divine planes exists, and from the bottom of the spine towards down represents all the lower planes.
At the bottom of the spine there lies an abundant energy known as Kundalini which is helpful in propelling the Individual Consciousness either towards higher order or towards lower order, depending upon what type of Spiritual practise one undertakes.
When the number 3 is completed in round forms it becomes 8 which represents the eight-fold creation namely – the five elements of nature: Sky, Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and subtle mind, intelligence and ego for the individual consciousness.
The entire OM sound is also known as AAUM. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krushna says he is the first letter ‘A’ among syllables. The AAUM is called Ekakshara which has three subtle portions combined in it namely, ‘AA’ represents Lord Vishnu, ‘U’ represents Lord Brahma, ‘M’ represents Lord Shiva, this combination is AAUM. These forces that is Lord Brahma, the creative force creates the creation, Lord Vishnu protects the creation and Lord Shiva dissolves the creation.
So, the entire AAUM/OM represents all the three forces of the creation namely creation, maintenance and destruction. Beyond the sound AAUM/OM there lies an absolute pure, supremely blissful Absolute Silence which is the ultimate abode of the Supreme Being from which the waves of AAUM/OM arises and accumulates as vibrations to form the five elements of nature.
The Individual mind and consciousness of living beings arises from the Supreme Silence as Individual Consciousness or individuality of animals and human beings.
Behind all the five elements (which is non-living) of nature, the mind and Individual Consciousness, there lies the Supreme, eternal, universal , all Pervading, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent Supreme Being which is nothing but the Supreme Silence or the Abode of Universal Consciousness. Therefore, in Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krushna says his Abode Is beyond “Akshara” that is beyond AAUM.
If one Meditates upon AAUM/OM, that entity rotates within the creation all the time and can’t go beyond the creation to reach the Abode of God/ Supreme Being/ Universal Consciousness.
In Sanskrit the Shloka for AAUM is:
“Akaro Vishnu Rupancha, Ukaro Brahma Rupancha, Makaro Shiva Rupancha; Iti Omkaram.”
If we have to transcend this creative sound AAUM, we have to meditate upon the divine names of Hindu Gods who have originated from the Supreme Being and they are Supreme Beings themselves within creation and they can take the Individual Consciousness and disseminate into Universal Consciousness forever. This secret of transcending AAUM/OM through any one of the divine names is revealed in Kali Santarna Upanishad where Lord Brahma explains to Divine Sage Naarada this secret of transcending AAUM/OM in Kali Yuga (Iron age).
In fact, the Sanathan divine name is the secret code to reach Supreme Being / Universal Consciousness forever and never to return. Meditation in divine name opens the door to Supreme Being / Universal Consciousness.
“Spiritual Evolution is the return journey of the soul (Individual Consciousness) to its origin (Universal Consciousness).”
