Nature of Consciousness

- We are experiencing the outer world through the five senses of the body. The Senses are sending signals with regard to the outer world to the brain which is the physical basis for experiencing the outer world. The brain in turn sends the signals further to the Mind. Though the Mind is invisible and not tangible enough to dissect in the laboratory to know about its constituents, yet nobody disputes its existence because everybody thinks and acts according to the operation of one’s Mind.
- The brain will pass on the signals of the experience of the outer world to this invisible Mind because Mind is connected to the brain.
- The Mind processes the signals received from the brain with regard to the outer world and further pass on the same to the intellect (intelligence/buddhi) which is one of the Mind’s subtle faculties. This intelligence determines the nature of reaction the Mind has to make with regard to signals received in regard to the outer world.
- Therefore, the intellect and the Mind jointly create the required thought process so that a person inter reacts with the outer world (including with his body) according to the demanding circumstances.
- Therefore, every thought is the combination of mental energy and intelligence in dynamic form. We are aware that the Mind constantly produces thoughts in a non-stop manner.
- Now, the question arises that where from this unending energy and intelligence combined thoughts are arising. What is the source which supplies this product called thoughts and who is that who is experiencing the outer world (including one’s own body) through all the above process.
- That is the Individual ego or the Individuality (‘I’) of the person embedded deep inside and connected to the intellect and Mind. This can be termed as Individual Consciousness or Awareness which is the Individualized part of the Universal Consciousness/ awareness.
- If all the arising thoughts are stopped, then the Individual Consciousness or the ‘I’ get exposed, just as when all the clouds are blown away, the non-moving sky get exposed.
- The ‘I’ or Individual ego or Individual Consciousness though being a part of the Universal Consciousness, experiences itself just as a person’s view of the sky is limited from horizon to horizon, though this is not the true fact because the sky is infinite and it is everywhere. This individualized visualization of the sky ceases when one realizes that the sky is infinite and it is everywhere. Similarly, when the Individual Consciousness frees itself from all the limitations imposed on it by the Intellect and Mind because of Karma (action and reaction phenomena), it experiences the infinity of the All-pervading, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent, Universal Consciousness and gradually the Individual Consciousness dissolves into IT just as an ice cube dissolving in the sea water when it is put into it. Ice cube is symbolically the Individual Consciousness and Sea is symbolically the Universal Consciousness but both are in essence water. Ice cube is bounded by the shape whereas Sea is not. This is how Individual Consciousness suffers limitations due to Karma whereas Universal Consciousness is free from it.
The Karma is the play of the Universal Consciousness Individualizing itself in varied forms as living beings including Gods and Goddesses and also as non-living creation. This is the secret of Consciousness and life and also that of the creation.
- Universal Consciousness is the existence itself. The Individual Consciousness (‘I’, Ego or Soul) being a part of the Universal Consciousness is imperishable, eternal in existence despite of rebirths until it dissolves into the Universal Consciousness and it is aware of itself for all times. The Universal Consciousness though it is ONE, expresses itself as infinitely MANY. The nature of the Universal Consciousness is Absolute NOTHINGNESS but it is the Home of EVERYTHING. It is beyond time and space and it is in ZERO state (Zero state means full and complete, whereas the soul i.e., Individual Consciousness is incomplete because it is bound by Karma). Universal Consciousness is pure and absolute vacuum , totally still yet it is FULL. The sound ‘Aa’ ( A ) emanates from it which is the root of the entire creation. Finally, it is IT. From this Absolute vacuum state which is pervading everything and the core of everything, arises the sound vibrations which forms the waves, waves become wave particles, particles to light (Prakash and Tejas i.e., heat), light to atoms (Anu), atoms to molecules (Paramaanu), molecules to matter and the creation. The pure, Silent vacuum state i.e., Universal Consciousness though like sky is indivisible yet it appears as infinite number of finite divisions which becomes the Individual living Beings (Individual entities) with this divided Universal Consciousness as the Soul. All the living Beings are having this Individualized Consciousness.
The matter and the living Beings are all nothing but the Universal Consciousness in their core, and the Individual Consciousness is bound by both finer and grosser manifestation. The Universal Consciousness is ever aware of itself. When one becomes aware of his/her own consciousness then it connects to the Universal Consciousness. When the body of such a realized person who is totally freed from Karma, is shed, then the Individual Consciousness dissolves into the Universal Consciousness forever. This is Moksha (Salvation). Those who have not realized their own consciousness yet because of Karma, they move on into the cycle of births and deaths.

Bhagavadgita – Chapter 8, Stanza 21
Lord Krushna declares that “My abode is beyond that manifest, dynamic yet formless one called Akshara”. Akshara is the first cosmic sound AAUM which does not diminish unlike other sounds till the WILL of the Supreme Being wants to withdraw it, which evidently mean that the abode of the Supreme Being/Universal Consciousness and also, that of the Individual Consciousness are in Absolute Benign SILENT state even beyond Peace and Bliss (dwandwatheetha) and also beyond the sound AAUM”.
Though the Consciousness is in absolute silence yet it is dynamic (live and benign silence) and not dead silence (which is fearsome). AAUM is the cosmic sound that arises from the Supreme, Absolute, Benign SILENT state of the Supreme Being, which is the taproot cause of the entire creation. One who reaches that state of the Supreme Being transcending the Akshara AAUM shall have no return into the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, Lord Krushna has declared that his abode is beyond Akshara i.e., beyond sound AAUM and HE is in Absolute Silence, Static yet Dynamic in nature, and whoever reaches this state (Universal Consciousness) shall permanently disseminate into HIM (the Supreme, Eternal, and Universal Consciousness).
- The sound waves arising from the Supreme/ Universal Consciousness is the dynamic manifestation of the Supreme Consciousness itself. These sound waves are nothing but pure energy (Shakti) that is emanating from the Supreme Consciousness in which it is always hidden or latent. These energy sound cum waves are the root cause for the entire creation ant it is nothing but the Universal Consciousness itself. This phenomena is shown in the Sanathana Dharma as, Lord Naaraayana having the abode of goddess Lakshmi in his chest i.e., within HIM (i.e., energy within the Consciousness).
Lord Shiva having the energy (Shakthi) as his half feminine form (Ardhanaarishwara i.e., amalgam of Energy and Consciousness). The pure energy (sound waves) is guided in its dynamic manifestation as Creation (Nature) by the Universal Consciousness which is behind it. Energy in its action is always guided by Consciousness.
- In the Mathematics principle, the Supreme Consciousness is represented by Zero (Complete and Fullness) and the Energy (Shakthi) which is coming out from it and manifesting as the entire Creation as ONE. The mathematical figure 10 (TEN) represents energy and consciousness together which is pervading in every atom of the creation. The creation with all the infinite parallel planes of existence exists between ONE (Sound waves) and NINE (grossest).
- Beyond the creation the creator i.e., Supreme Consciousness abides in Zero state where energy is with in itself and this constitutes one single principle i.e., Universal The number TEN also constitutes Dasha Disha i.e., Ten Directions meaning Eight directions in 360 degrees and Up direction and Down direction within the Creation. When there is no creation, there are no directions. Similarly, when it comes to dimensions within the creation, there are four dimensions namely Length, Breadth, Depth and Height. Dimensionless state (Absence of Dimension) is the Fifth Dimension where there is no creation but the creator alone abides as Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent, All-Pervading Absolute / Supreme / Universal BEING or Consciousness.

Whatever that manifests as creation from the Absolute and Wholeness (Supreme/ Universal Consciousness) is also Absolute and Whole. When this manifested Absolute and Whole (creation) dissolves into the Supreme Consciousness, IT remains the same (Absolute and Whole).
In the end everything is Supreme/ Universal Consciousness ITSELF. Creation is nothing but the play and display of that Unmanifest Absolute Universal Consciousness.
Suspension of mental activity in Sanathan Meditation is neither attainment of Trans nor is the end of spiritual journey. Realization of Universal Consciousness/ Supreme Being is the real end of spiritual journey.
